Tuning the Nissan Platform.
Nissan's tuning heritage in Australia runs through the RB-series Skyline GT-R to the modern R35, and the platform knowledge accumulated across both generations is deep. The RB26DETT in the R32/R33/R34 Skyline GT-R was deliberately rated at 206kW (276PS) under the Japanese manufacturers' gentlemen's agreement — the actual factory output is considerably more, and the engine was designed from the start for motorsport applications at multiples of the listed power. A standard RB26 on a quality ECU remap running higher boost is a 250–280kW at-the-wheels car. With upgraded turbos, fuelling, and a proper calibration, 350kW+ at the wheels on a stock block is well-established territory.
The VR38DETT twin-turbo V6 in the R35 GT-R is one of the most technically sophisticated OEM turbocharged engines ever produced — dry-sump oiling, plasma-sprayed cylinder bores, individually addressable direct ignition coils, and a GR6 dual-clutch transmission with its own dedicated ECU. The factory R35 ECU applies aggressive power limiting, particularly at lower ambient temperatures and in certain operating conditions. An ECU remap matched with a GR6 TCU tune unlocks the car's full potential and is the highest-value single modification on any R35. Stage 1 on a stock R35 regularly produces 410–430kW at the wheels on our Mainline dyno.
For the diesel market, the Navara YD25 (D22/D40) and Patrol ZD30 are the most common tunes. The YD25 is a solid common-rail engine that responds well to remapping with reliable gains. The ZD30 in the Y61 Patrol has a well-documented sensitivity to overboost at stock calibration — the factory ECU allows boost spikes that can cause head gasket failures. A proper ECU tune with controlled boost pressure and supporting intercooler upgrade is not just a performance modification but a reliability one for Patrol owners.

Common Questions.
How much power can a Nissan R35 GT-R gain from an ECU and TCU tune?
A stock R35 GT-R makes approximately 340kW at the wheels on our Mainline AWD dyno. A Stage 1 ECU remap matched with a GR6 TCU tune typically takes this to 415–430kW — a 75–90kW gain with no hardware changes. The TCU tune is as important as the ECU work: it raises the transmission torque limits, improves shift speed, and makes the launch control work more aggressively. Stage 2 with upgraded turbine housings or compressor wheels takes the R35 into 500kW+ territory.
Is the RB26DETT easy to tune to high power?
The RB26DETT has decades of development behind it and responds very predictably to tuning. The stock factory ECU needs to be replaced or remapped via a Nistune board for proper calibration access. Stage 1 on the factory turbos with a quality tune and mild boost increase produces around 270kW at the wheels. Stage 2 with larger turbos (single conversion is common), upgraded injectors, and E85 takes the RB26 well past 400kW on the original bottom end. The iron block and forged steel crank make it extremely durable at elevated power.
What are the risks of tuning a Nissan ZD30 Patrol diesel?
The ZD30 has a well-documented issue with overboost in stock form — the factory ECU boost control can allow spikes to 1.3+ bar under certain conditions, which is above the safe limit for the head gasket on a warm engine. This has caused head gasket failures on stock, unmodified Patrols. A proper ECU tune with controlled boost targets (and an intercooler upgrade) actually reduces this risk while improving performance. A stock ZD30 Patrol is arguably more reliable with a quality tune than without one.
How much power can a Navara YD25 diesel make on a tune?
A stock Navara D40 or D23 YD25DDTi makes approximately 110kW at the wheels. A Stage 1 ECU remap raises this to 145–150kW with improved torque throughout the rev range. The main improvement is felt in the 1500–3000 RPM range during highway overtaking and towing — the stock Navara feels noticeably lazy at those speeds, and the tune directly addresses this. We recommend an intercooler upgrade alongside the tune for sustained towing in hot conditions.
What ECU is in the Nissan R35 GT-R and how is it tuned?
The R35 GT-R uses Nissan's proprietary ECU with extensive monitoring and protection systems, including a launch control limiter, power limiters based on ambient conditions, and a separate GR6 transmission ECU. Tuning is performed via specialist software and hardware that communicates with the factory ECU over CAN bus — it's not a reflash-and-done process. Our R35 tunes are developed over multiple dyno sessions with monitoring of all critical parameters including knock, lambda, and transmission temperatures.
