What is RG240 Emissions Testing?

RG240 is a 240-second loaded-mode emissions test that Victoria uses to verify a vehicle still meets the Australian Design Rule (ADR) standards it was built to — even after modifications, after being imported, or after being built up from scratch.

The vehicle is strapped to a dyno that simulates a real urban + highway drive cycle. A five-gas analyser samples the exhaust every second and compares the readings against the ADR limits that apply to your vehicle's year and category.

Other states call this IM240 — the procedure is functionally identical. In Victoria, you only need it when your car goes through the Vehicle Assessment Signatory Scheme (VASS) — for modified, imported, or individually constructed vehicles. Standard, factory-spec cars don't need it.

Why it matters

Without an RG240 pass, your VASS signatory can't certify your build, you can't get a modification plate, and the car can't be legally registered. It's the last technical gate between you and a number plate.

Who Needs an RG240 Test?

Imported Vehicles: Cars that have been personally imported or are grey-imports require emission clearance before registration.

Modified Vehicles: Any modifications that alter the original ADR compliance, such as engine swaps or exhaust upgrades, necessitate an RG240 test.

Individually Constructed Vehicles: Kit cars and ICVs built from scratch must pass the RG240 to receive certification from a VASS signatory.

Export Vehicles: Cars intended for export that require an Australian-standard emissions certificate.

The five-gas analyser

What gets measured.

Every second of the 240-second cycle, the sampling probe pulls a live exhaust reading from the tailpipe. Five gases are tracked and compared against the applicable ADR pass band.

CO

Carbon monoxide

Indicates combustion richness; high levels may signify catalyst or fueling issues.

HC

Hydrocarbons

Measures unburnt fuel; elevated levels might indicate mechanical malfunctions.

NOx

Oxides of nitrogen

Formed under high temperatures; crucial for modified petrol or turbocharged vehicles.

CO₂

Carbon dioxide

Confirms complete combustion and validates other readings.

O₂

Oxygen

Helps assess fuel-air mixture integrity.

Process

Certificate by lunch.

01T-0min

Pre-Test Inspection

Visual checks and an OBD scan are performed to ensure your vehicle is primed for the test.

02T-15min

Warm-Up Cycle

Your vehicle undergoes a warm-up to guarantee optimal engine and catalytic converter temperatures.

03T-45min

The RG240 Test

The five-gas analyser collects live exhaust readings over a 240-second cycle.

04T-90min

Certification

If your vehicle passes, we provide your emissions certificate the same day; if it fails, we address the issues before re-testing.

Why Tuned by Apex

The advantage of testing
where the tuner lives.

VicRoads approved tester

Our RG240 testing facility is recognised by VicRoads and operates within the Vehicle Assessment Signatory Scheme (VASS) framework. Every certificate is accepted by signatories statewide.

4WD, RWD, AWD — all welcome

Many emissions facilities only handle 2WD cars. Our Mainline AWD hub dyno tests anything driven by one, two, three or four wheels. No turning trucks away.

Fail? We fix it on-site

Most testers fail you and send you elsewhere to chase the problem. We are a full custom tuning workshop. AFR off? We re-map. Lean misfire? We diagnose. One roof, one bill.

Two-hour turnaround

Standard passes are wrapped in under two hours. Next-day availability — no two-week queue. The certificate goes straight to your VASS engineer.

The single biggest difference

We are a full custom tuning workshop with a five-gas analyser in the same bay. If your car fails, we don't shrug and send you elsewhere — we pull up the calibration, fix the cause, and re-run the cycle. Diesel or petrol, factory or stand-alone ECU.
